Fedora 10 network configuration is broken

Monday, January 5, 2009

And the new year gets off to a frustrating start ... I installed Fedora 10 on one of my QA machines this weekend and ran into some problems today when I attempted to change the network settings to use static IP. It turns out that the GUI network configuration tool is broken in Fedora 10 and does not save the netmask value (it seems to write the gateway IP address to the netmask field in the configuration file). The workaround for this issue was simply to edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 manually and enter the correct netmask value. Unfortunately I wasted half an hour before realising what the problem was. My day can only get better.

Ditto, new FC10 install.
Looking at the file, the netmask is set as I set it via the gui?

Curious Andy?

It is a known bug in Fedora 10:

It looks like it was recently fixed though so I guess you must have a more up to date version of FC10 than the one I had installed at the time of this post?

Not only is the network configuration GUI broken ... but other things as well.

In general I really like the FC / Fedora systems for my personal network and SB, but releasing F10 and not testing the stuff that the "gifted hacker" may use (i.e., the Network GUI) is simply stupid. How may anyone have confidence in Fedora?

Then we have other issues as well. The network does not come up because the default is to NOT start "network". What was the release manager smoking that night?

Okay, enough blasting Fedora and the release control people. Overall the look is good, the system generally works (but I do think we have an ssh/ssl problem).

So, bottom line - if you want a stand-alone system it probably will work, if you are a netadmin wait for F11? Perhaps, some of the problems will be fixed?
